"Then she kind of called me out and said she needed someone to train with, and so I actually became her sparring partner for v or six years. If she was having 15 hot dogs, I would eat 16 and so on."

Mele, who is the 30th ranked eater in the world and lives in Long Pond, was more than happy to teach Chiger, now ranked the 15th eater in the globe, how to munch fast and against the clock.

"Practicing past yourself is boring and at that place'due south no motivation, so be able to take somebody else who wants to try doing this well with you is fun considering you push one another," she said. "You're trying to vanquish each other."

Practice pays off in contest

In 2015, she convinced Chiger to chase the mustard belt and compete at a qualifier for a spot in Nathan's popular swallow fest.

"I came in second identify and ate 17 hot dogs in 10 minutes," he said. "I was hooked."
